What we do

Westfield Trees, established in 2001 by Matt Williams, and based in Three Oaks, near Hastings, undertakes all aspects of tree work from felling whole trees, which may be dangerous or detrimental to the look of a property, to removing dead limbs, pollarding, reducing and shaping trees for safety reasons and for cosmetic effect. The company also specialises in pruning hedges, reducing them in both height and width to create a neat and tidy form and the supply of woodchip and mulch.

About us

After studying for his B-TEC diploma in horticulture between 1994 and 1995, Matt Williams, proprietor of Westfield Trees, then went on to obtain his NPTC (National Proficiency Tests Council) qualification for ground work whilst working at Netherfield Place. He subsequently worked for Connick Tree Care as a groundsman, progressing to tree work after he passed the NPTC in climbing, aerial rescue, felling and hung up trees. Matt worked as part of a team on the Hastings council contract for two years.
After having travelled Australia and New Zealand for a year, Matt started Westfield Trees in 2001. The company carries out tree and hedge work for both private and commercial clients; some of these include Combe Haven Holiday Park, Arko Property Management, Stredder Pearce, the NHS and local parishes.

Formative pruning

Cutting back branches during the early years of a tree's growth, to establish a sound branch structure or desired form, and/or to correct defects or weaknesses for example dead, dying or diseased wood. The optimal time period for formative pruning to take place is from October to February as this tends to be the dormant period of most trees.

Pollarding

Traditionally, and still commonly used, this term describes the removal of all branches from the trunk. A less frequently used definition can mean the regular (annual or biannual) pruning back of small branches to the same point resulting in the formation of a 'pollard head'. Pollarding is a popular way of preventing too much growth, especially on Willow, Poplar and Eucalyptus trees and is also an effective way of treating a damaged tree.

Crown thinning and reduction

Crown thinning is the removal of a small portion of secondary branches to produce a uniform density of foliage around an evenly spaced branch structure. Crown thinning does not alter the overall size or shape of the tree. Common reasons for it are to allow more light to pass through the tree, reduce wind resistance or to lessen the weight of heavy branches and improve the form of the tree.
Crown reduction is used to reduce the height and/or spread of the crown of a tree by the removal of the ends of branches whilst maintaining the tree's natural shape as far as is practicable.

Felling/dismantling

The complete removal of a tree down to ground level. Very often space is limited and the tree must be taken down piece by piece (dismantling), but if space and safety permit, a tree can be felled in one piece. If the area below the tree is clear and free from obstructions, cut branches can simply be allowed to fall. When branches are too large or heavy for the climber to hold and throw clear, or obstructions prevent their 'free falling', then lowering ropes will be used. The stump will be left as close to the ground as possible but will be above soil level. A tree stump may be poisoned to prevent its re-growth and to allow it to slowly decay.

Hedge trimming/removal

Westfield Trees can prune, shape or remove any hedge, from ornamental to wild and rural, 3 feet to 30 feet high, reducing the height and width or just clipping to create a neat and tidy form. We will advise on the most cost effective long term management and legal obligations including the 'High Hedge Act'.

Testimonials

Excellent job

Thank you, Matt, for an excellent job, completed with a great team, all of whom were friendly, polite and helpful. I highly recommend you for any tree and hedge work and will be using you again in the future.

Hedge work

We were very pleased with the work Westfield Trees did on our large and overgrown hedge and a couple of trees that needed pruning. The work was carried out on time and the garden left tidy and clear. The quote was fair and we will certainly be calling on them again when the hedge next needs attention.

Excellent communication

Matt quoted for us after having been let down by another tree surgeon. His quote was very competitive and it was a large job which he worked with me in planning. The team was efficient and polite; they worked hard and, as promised, they cleared as they went. Communication was excellent and a tricky job was over and done with in a few short days. I highly recommend Matt's work and enjoyed working with someone so honest, reasonable and professional. I will be using him again

Wholeheartedly recommended

We had two very large trees in our garden that needed to be brought right down to about a metre high. Matt and his team did an exceptional job. They arrived when they said they would and were very polite, professional, knowledgeable, tidy and efficient. The quote was very competitive and they had been recommended to us by previous customers. We have to say we are very, very happy with the job and very pleased that we took up that recommendation. We would wholeheartedly recommend them to anybody that needs tree work done.

Efficient, reliable and organised

We were really pleased with the service we received from Westfield Trees. They were extremely efficient, reliable and organised. They know their profession and took great care when cutting our trees. They left our garden really tidy and took all the cuttings away. We would highly recommend them.

Huge difference to our garden

I just want to say huge thanks and what a great job Westfield Trees have done in taking down four mature Oak trees in our garden that were very close to our house with a very good possibility of falling into the house. Neighbours watching were very impressed with how they were professionally taken down without damaging any fences (only a foot away). You have made a huge difference to our garden and our neighbours now have an amazing view. Highly recommend you guys well done.
